Growing healthy, missional churches in the PC(USA)

Northumbria Community "How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?"

The Northumbria Community is organized along the lines of a monastic order – but engagement with the world as its aim. If you follow the links of who they are to the description of their “Rule” you will get a statement that is concise yet open (at the bottom of the overview is a link to “more about the “Rule”). The two major themes are availability and vulnerability. Into both of these fits the activity of the community. It’s a nice resource for developing the proposed character of any new church or transforming community.

  1. I knew you could do it…

  2. We are an expression of the New Monasticism within the PCUSA in the Northumbrian Tradition. We’re playful, earthy, and serious about the work of community. Our life is organized around a Rule (which reflects the Rule of the Northumbria Community) and around a discipline of fixed hour prayer. Recently, we’ve been given a gift of 22 acres of woodland near East Bethany, NY. Our membership is very diverse. Probably 50% or better have a connection with the Recovering Community (AA and/or NA). We’ve been together a couple of years and we happy to say that we’ll be moving to finalize our status as a NCD in the Presbytery of the Genesee Valley in March. We believe that honest living is quiet and simple. We are more interested in being authentic than in achieving happiness as our culture understands it…

Please be in touch if you are interested in discussing the gifts of the Northumbria Tradition for new church development in the PCUSA. I’d love to speak with you!
